Asus makes great products, you’d have a hard time going wrong with really any of those. But the asus would be my pick.

Didn't you say you were taking this to college to use for engineering work like SW and MATLAB? If that's the case, you are going to regret getting a gaming laptop. Just buy a Dell M6800 and be done with it. You should be able to sneak one with an i7, 16GB and a Quadro K3100m and SSD under $2000.

I’ll see what I can dig up after I put the kids to bed and get back on my desktop in a little bit here. Dell’s site and my phone are not getting along. I’m a mechanical engineer. We switched our office around 5 years to gaming stuff - mainly Alienware - when Dell was slacking off with the Precision line to try to get more bang for our buck and it didn’t work out as well as expected. We’ve been switching back to Precision over the past few years and been much happier with our engineering software running as intended and parts not failing constantly.

The gaming laptops will work just fine,. The only reason he should get something with a quadro is if it was just a work station. If he has to do something that computationally dense there should be computer labs with dedicated computers for that.

Wellllllll my bad sorry. It looks like Dell doesn’t do any student discounts on the Precision line. I was assuming that a student price would look pretty much like what I configured on the Premier site, but no dice.

I wasn’t thinking about processing power or Quadro vs. GeForce - I was thinking about durabilty/longevity. IME gaming laptops are typically chintzy, because they focus on putting as many specs and LED’s as possible to a price point. The Precisions are built like brick shithouses.

My vote is for the Gigabyte P37X. Personally from that list, I’d only consider the Gigabyte and msi, because they are the only ones that give you 2 years standard on the warranty. Even if it will spend most of its time on a desk in a dorm room you want something that a company is willing to stand behind for more than a year without asking you to pay extra. Of those 2, the P37X just seems like the sleeker machine - easier to move around if you have to. Also, I’ve had better personal experience with Gigabyte stuff than msi in my home-built rigs, but maybe that’s just me.

MSI has been around too long to be “bad”. Personally, I prefer Gigabyte stuff, but I may be just jaded from an MSI GeForce card I had at some point that seemed to cause blue screens, but was never broken enough to get them to fix under warranty. I got my BS at Syracuse did my MS at Penn State. Neither are traditional engineering powerhouses, but I think I got a pretty good education both places. Where are you headed?

No they don’t sorry misunderstood the question. I was just commenting on the things they do offer.
UF seems like a really great place to go to school. I grew up in PA. My brother got into UF, but then decided to stay somewhat close and went to Boston U. I was hoping he would go to UF so I could visit him somewhere warm. Enjoy your time there. Work hard, but make time to have fun!

Here’s the current build I have:
How long were you using your machine when you were in school? Short busts or long hauls? The Workstation can go 7hrs+ without charge w/ load

Back when I was in school we were lucky to get much more than 3 hours out of a battery. I actually used a PowerBook G4 that I bought on launch day in 2003 through 2008. It mostly lived in my room, but I did take it around campus - usually for short bursts and I always had a charger handy.
I have a Precision M4700 at work - basically the previous generation of the one you configured there. I take it out in the field a lot. Battery life depends a lot on what we are doing with it. Working hard it only lasts a few hours, but lighter stuff like Word and programming it can go all day. I’d imagine these newer ones are even more power efficient.
One great thing about Precisions is the service - if you do have a problem, it gets solved fast. The base warranty is 3 years and where I work we typically pay to upgrade that to 4 year with the accidental damage coverage. We had an issue with dirt under the screen of a Precision laptop that got fixed in two days no questions asked. We also have a T7610 desktop that had a DIMM slot on the mobo stop working after 18 months and on the phone they gave us the choice of having a technician come out and install a new motherboard later that week or overnighting one so that we could do it ourselves the next morning.
From what I hear, these latest M-series Quadros in that M7510 are decent for gaming - definitely less of a drop-off compared to a GTX than the previous K-series Quadros. The M2000M option should be pretty much the same as a GTX960M.
